Submerged Entry Nozzle

The submerged entry nozzle (SEN) is used to transport the molten steel from a tundish to a mould. The main purpose of its usage is to prevent oxygen and nitrogen pick-up by molten steel from the gas. Furthermore, to achieve the desired flow conditions in the mould. Therefore, the SEN can be considered as a vital factor for a stable casting process and the steel quality. In addition, the steelmaking processes occur at high temperatures around 1873 K, so the interaction between the refractory materials of the submerged entry nozzle and molten steel is unavoidable. Therefore, the knowledge of the submerged entry nozzle behaviors during preheating and casting processes is necessary for the design of the steelmaking processes.

Submerged Entry Nozzle Introduction:

Submerged entry nozzles manufactured by Wanhao Refractory are classified into plug-in type, hanging type and fast renewal type; and based on material quality, nozzles mainly classified into aluminum carbon, zirconium carbon and magnesia carbon. Submerged Entry Nozzle enjoys performances of purifying liquid steel, prevent liquid steel oxidation, with good liquid steel washing resistance and erosion resistance.

Submerged Entry Nozzle and Shrouds are designed to protect the steel flow from the Tundish to the mould. Sub-Entry Nozzle is fixed inside the tundish similar to a Tundish Nozzle, while the sub-entry shroud is fitted from the outside on the Tundish Nozzle. Submerged entry nozzle connects the tundish and the mold in the continuous casting of steel.
In vertical continuous casting machines the liquid steel from the tundish is poured into the mold through the Submerged Entry Nozzle (SEN). The shape and direction of the SEN exit jets affect the liquid steel dynamics inside the mold.

Submerged Entry Nozzle Feature:

  • Zirconia slag-line protection
  • Outlet port design
  • Anti-clogging liner
  • Anti-inclusion liner
  • Full vitrified glaze protection prior to preheat
  • Seating composite material sequence casting

A submerged entry nozzle, a tube-shaped device composed of refractory, is used to conduct molten steel from the tundish to the mold during continuous casting of steel. During the process, the submerged entry nozzle serves to protect the melt from oxidation and to stabilize the casting process. Submerged entry nozzle is suitable for use in casting various types of steel such as high concentration oxygen-containing steel, high concentration Mn-containing steel, Ca-treated steel, and stainless steel. Submerged Entry Nozzle are usually made from a combination of carbon bonded alumina, zirconia and magnesia with graphite, which have been found to give the best response to the extreme demands of thermal shock, corrosion and erosion resistance.

In continuous casting technology, in order to improve the slab quality, an immersion nozzle is set between the tundish and the mold. Its main functions are:

1. To prevent the secondary oxidation and nitriding of molten steel and the splashing of molten steel

2. Adjust the molten steel flow state and injection speed

3. Preventing non-metallic inclusions in mold flux from being involved in molten steel plays an important role in promoting the floating of inclusions in molten steel

4. It has a decisive influence on the yield and slab quality of side casting.

How to choose Submerged Entry Nozzle:

The appropriate immersion nozzle shape should be selected according to the size of the pouring section and the pouring speed. When casting slabs and blooms, side-hole nozzles with different exit angles are generally used; When casting small-section billets, submerged entry nozzles with straight holes downward are generally used.
